Audition Info/ Characters in A Christmas Carol

The time is 1843. The place is London England. Its Christmas Eve and penny-pinching old Ebenezer Scrooge is about to have the most sleepless night of his life. His Technicolor dreams come to life on stage as he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Be as well as his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, who just happened to die seven years previously on Christmas Eve. They show him the error of his ways and convince him that it’s never too late to open your heart and get the Christmas Spirit. Among the wonderful characters in this version, as well as Ebenezer at various ages and the ghosts mentioned above, are Ebenezer’s poorly paid employee Bob Cratchit, Bob’s disabled son Tiny Tim, the Cratchit family, Ebenezer’s nephew Fred and his wife and family, young Ebenezer’s fiancé, Emily, jovial banker Mr. Fezziwig and Mrs. Fezziwig, and many bit parts and cameos for chorus members of all ages, shapes and sizes.

Scrooge (Ab2 – G4, 50+)
A mean spirited, uncaring, lonely, bitter miser. To him, money is everything.
Bob Cratchit (B2 – E4, 30+)
A meek, put upon little man. He works for Scrooge as a bookkeeper. He is first and foremost a family man and dearly loves his wife and children, especially his young son, Tiny Tim.

Tiny Tim Cratchit (unchanged voice Bb3 – D5, 8 - 10)
Bob Cratchit’s disabled, young son. He is the epitome of hope. Should be tiny in build and have a bright clear singing voice.

Jacob Marley (B2 – Ab4)
The ghost of Scrooge’s former business partner. Larger than life. Stage age 45+. Could be disguised to play other roles throughout aside from the 2-3 scenes in which Marley appears. Solo singing in a huge production number and some spoken word.

Lamplighter/Ghost of Christmas Past (Eb – G)
Dual role. Largest singing role of the 3 ghosts. Historically, this ghost was female. Female or male will do. It will all depend on the look and the voice. No specific stage age but maturity would be a plus. Appears as Ghost in Act 1 only. May play other bits in Act 2 or remain as lamplighter. Solo singing.

Sandwich Board Man/Ghost of Christmas Present (Bb2 – G4)
Dual role. A Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus type. Jolly and good natured. A mature vaudeville style song and dance man. One big number with female chorus backup singers and dancers. Appears as Ghost only in Act 2 so could play other parts in Act 1 or remain as Sandwich Board Man. Solo singing.

Blind Old Hag/Ghost of Christmas Yet To Be (Db4 – Db5 (F5))
Dual role. Some solo singing but emphasis is on acting. Dance would be an asset. Appears only as Ghost in Act 2 so could cover other bits in Act I or remain as blind old hag.

Fred Anderson (A2 – E4, 30 - 40)
Scrooges’s nephew: A family man who wants nothing more than for him and his family to get to know his uncle better. A true optimist.

Mr. Fezziwig (Bb2 – B4, 55+)
Scrooge’s first employer in the financial world. A man who had good business sense but had good people skills as well and believed that successful business relied on working hard and playing hard. Solo singing. Good rhythm.

Mrs. Fezziwig
Fezziwig’s adoring, fun loving wife. Stage are 55+. Solo singing. A wonderful homemaker and the perfect hostess. Good mover.Vocal Range: A3 – A4
